Christmas Hat – 1-2 year size
Head width: 16”
Head depth: 10.5”
Materials: 2 balls filatura di crosa “Zara”, 1 ball Filatura “New Smoking”, about 12-18 buttons
Gauge: 3.5 stitches and 5 rows = 1” in stockinette stitch using yarn doubled
Needle size: US 10 or size needed to obtain gauge
Using size 10 needles, cast on 56 stitches. Work in garter stitch for 1”. Continue in stockinette stitch until piece measures 4” ending after a purl row.
Begin decreases as follows:
Row 1: (Knit 9, K2tog) repeat to last stitch, K1 (51 sts)
Rows 2-6: Continue in stockinette stitch without decreasing
Row 7: (Knit 8, K2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (46 sts)
Rows 8-10: Continue in st st without decreasing
Row 11: (K7, K2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (41 sts)
Rows 12-14: Continue in st st without decreasing
Row 15: (K6, K2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (36 sts)
Rows 16-18: Continue in st st without decreasing
Row 19: (K5, K2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (31 sts)
Rows 20-22: Continue in st st without decreasing
Row 23: (K4, K2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (26 sts)
Rows 24-26: Continue in st st without decreasing
Row 27: (K3, k2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (21 sts)
Row 28: Purl
Row 29: (K2, k2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (16 sts)
Row 30: Purl
Row 31: (K1, K2tog) repeat to last stitch, k1 (11 sts)
Row 32: Purl
Row 33: (k2tog) repeat to end (6 sts)
Row 34: Purl
Row 35: (K2tog) repeat to end (3 sts)
Cut the yarn, leaving a 12” tail. Thread the yarn onto a tapestry needle and pull it through the remaining stitches once. Sew the hat together.
Garland: Holding two strands of the New Smoking together, work a crochet chain for approximately 48”. Beginning at the top of the hat, sew the garland down onto the hat using the buttons to tack it down.
